Memory #81-90
81 What is the benefit of this eating and drinking?
These words, "Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins," show us that in the
Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words.
For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.
82 Job 19: 25
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth.
83 Job 19: 26-27
And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God,
whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
84 How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things?
Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here:
"Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins." These words along with the
bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes
these words has exactly what they say: "Forgiveness of sins."
85 Ephesian 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing;
it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
86 Who receives this sacrament worthily?
Fasting and bodily preparation are certainly fine outward training. But that person is truly
worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: "Given and shed for you for the
forgiveness of sins." But anyone who does not believe these words or doubts them is
unworthy and unprepared, for the words "for you" require all hearts to believe.
87 Acts 4:29
" Lord… Grant to your servants to continue to speak Your word with all boldness. "
88 Hebrews 13: 5-6
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,
"The Lord is my helper; I will not fear."
89 Colossians 1:21-22
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now
reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and
blameless and above reproach before Him.
90 Romans 6:4
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just that as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
